The Canyon Creek experience was life changing for 90 Watts Learning Center students. The setting with hills, valleys and streams contrasted mightily with the South Los Angeles streets. The students, many for the first time, experienced nature first hand and brought life to language previously seen only in text books or on television. Excitement was the operative word as students enjoyed four fun-filled days with experienced culturally sensitive Camp Counselors. The counselors expertly conducted activities including archery, high ropes, soccer, swimming, hiking and many other field activities. Experiences at Canyon Creek Sports Camp broadened students' horizons for possible careers in camp counseling and other environmental fields. The food, reported by all, was great. Expectations for a return trip were high for the entire year and students told stories of forming new friendships and forming strong bonds with classmates. I highly recommend this outstanding Sports Camp experience especially for students from underserved communities in the inner-city.
